Street Food: Pares Retiro-style

Image
Pares, or beef pares , is one of the most popular street food in the Philippines. It is typically a bowl of braised beef stew served with a cup of garlic fried rice. The name ' pares ' literally translates to 'pair'. In the town where I live, several pares diners can be found. A fairly new one is situated near the town's center. Pares Point is a garage-turned-diner that serves pares and pares mami.  It is important to note that they serve ' retiro-style' pares which according to thesmartlocal.com, was where pares originated.  As can be seen in the photos, the diner only serves this dish. It may not seem much, but the food is not disappointing. Since they offer unlimited sabaw, it's the perfect place for pares fans who are on a budget.  Pares sprinkled with chicharron and a cup of garlic fried rice After eating, I suddenly realized that we should've ordered pares mami just so we can do a bit of photo op and taste test. However, since we were s

Control your temper

I am impatient. Most people who know me personally can attest to this. I may seem quiet and cool but I always pour out my frustrations to those who understand me. Anyway, I try my very best every time. Slowly, I have learned to follow many ways on how to control my anger. First, I acknowledge the emotion by mentioning it out loud. "I'm starting to feel angry."   Whenever I say this to the person I'm talking to, they automatically stop talking. This also helps me breathe and think things through. This is my ultimate secret weapon to control my anger. It's also good to understand what makes you tick. Ask yourself what your pet peeves are. I usually dislike it when people ask for my opinion or advice just to bluntly disagree with me after. The most common pet peeve others say are actions other people do unconsciously like chewing noisily, smoking in public places, laughing out loudly, etc. What's your pet peeve? Once you get to know what makes you

The worth of zoos (Subic Ocean Adventure and Zoobic Safari)

It has long been a dream of mine to visit a zoo. When I was young, I remembered wishing to visit the Manila Zoo whenever we go to the metro to pick-up relatives in the airport. Time passed and although I do not strongly wish to visit a zoo, I never really completely removed that from my to-do list. Fast forward to this year, I was blessed to have the chance to go on trips to different localities in my country. This actually is my second time to go to an animal sanctuary. The first one was in Davao, as I have featured in my previous blog post (5 Reasons to visit Davao). For this post though, I would like to highlight the pros and cons of zoos and aquariums. The views that I write here are entirely mine and I do not wish to bad mouth and/or promote any of the things I mention here. First, let me tell you the general view of most people. Many of the people I know are against zoos. This is because the idea of putting animals away from their natural habitat is unacceptable. Animals

5 reasons to visit Davao City

Image
Davao is a city in Mindanao that is the home of many great things from the Philippines. The urban life here is special and it cannot be compared to any other cities in the country. Here is a list of reasons why I think Davao is a place that you should not miss when in the Philippines. 1. Child-friendly destinations (The Philippine Eagle Foundation and Davao Crocodile Park and Zoo) The Philippine Eagle Foundation is dedicated to save and protect not only Eagles but also all other wildlife that are currently endangered. They also vow to protect the habitats of these creatures, especially Mt. Apo, the tallest mountain in the Philippines which can also be found in here in Davao. The sanctuary can be visited by tourists and locals and they are also open to those who are interested in sharing their time and love to animals by volunteering. You can check out more details about this in their official website ( https://www.philippineeaglefoundation.org/ ). You can even try adopting an a
