5 reasons to visit Davao City

Davao is a city in Mindanao that is the home of many great things from the Philippines. The urban life here is special and it cannot be compared to any other cities in the country.

Here is a list of reasons why I think Davao is a place that you should not miss when in the Philippines.

1. Child-friendly destinations (The Philippine Eagle Foundation and Davao Crocodile Park and Zoo)

The Philippine Eagle Foundation is dedicated to save and protect not only Eagles but also all other wildlife that are currently endangered. They also vow to protect the habitats of these creatures, especially Mt. Apo, the tallest mountain in the Philippines which can also be found in here in Davao.

The sanctuary can be visited by tourists and locals and they are also open to those who are interested in sharing their time and love to animals by volunteering. You can check out more details about this in their official website (https://www.philippineeaglefoundation.org/). You can even try adopting an animal of your choice. For this, go to their website for more details.

Admission fees: Adults are charged with Php 150, Kids (17 and below) should pay Php 100, while children below 4 years old can enter for free.
Guests can buy different souvenir items in their souvenir shop located at the entrance or in stalls near the parking area of the place. They also sell animals like rabbits and ornamental plants here.

Davao Crocodile Park and Zoo
This zoo is where you can see more wildlife creatures up close. Visitors can enjoy viewing, petting, and feeding some animals here. The main attraction here is their biggest crocodile named "Pangil". During our visit, we were able to witness the feeding time of Pangil. It was scary and astonishing since I never imagined that a crocodile can grow up to 18 feet long (according to their website).

What my kids particularly enjoyed here was feeding the fish (Koi) and watching other people feed the ostriches. We weren't able to visit the Butterfly House since it was only open until 5pm.

Many stalls are located beside the entrance of the park. You can try the exotic ice creams they offer (Crocodile + flavor) for less than 100 pesos. They also sell products like soaps, civet coffee, and Mindanao chocolate.

Admission fees: Adults (13 above) is Php 350, and kids below 13 are charged with Php 250.

2. Fruits, fruits, fruits!

The best time to visit Davao city is during their "Kidapawan Festival" which is held every month of August. Unfortunately, we visited Davao during the first week of September. Nonetheless, we were still able to enjoy most of the tropical fruits offered in this city without breaking the bank.

3. Safe

The people in Davao are all very friendly and accommodating. I do not exaggerate when I say that the people here will do their best to help you in many ways. Taxi drivers will recommend where you can buy the cheapest souvenirs and fruits, they do not overcharge (a rare situation in this country), and they strictly follow traffic rules.

Davao city also implements a strict "No smoking" policy in public areas. Once caught, you will be charged a hefty amount. Also, I do not recommend anyone to break this law since there are many law enforcers scattered around the city and its outskirts both uniformed and non-uniformed.

You'll see soldiers, policemen and other law enforcers but they are not intimidating. They actually made me feel safe. I realized that if something bad would happen, there would be people who'd respond immediately.

4. Shopping!

In the north, we all know Baguio city's night market in Session Road. In the south, people go to Roxas Street to shop for second-hand clothes and shoes. There are so many selections to choose from that you'll probably end up buying too many. In addition, this street also offers many street foods popular in Davao like tropical fruit flavored ice cream, fruit shakes, barbecue, seafood barbecue, and many more! You'll definitely want to eat a lot!

You can also try going around the city to check and explore products and services. If you're a fan of trekking and hiking, you can surely find a store where you can find things you need.

5. Beach life

A vacation is not complete without visiting the sea. We went to a place called Talicud island which is an island that is not as popular as Samal island but is equally beautiful. You may need to check for reservation and rates since the boats going to this island are scheduled. I do not have a lot of information about this place because I wasn't the person who reserved our accommodation so I can only show pictures. Nevertheless, I believe you can try to search the resort "Isla Reta" on Google.
